EXCESSIVE use of BOTOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bottom's Line, DAILY HEALTH NEWS:
In This Issue...
*Excessive Botox Use Cause for Concern -- As Toxin Gains Widespread Use, Safety Questions Arise...
*America's Most Beloved Health Researchers Cured a 2-Day Migraine in Minutes
*Proper Proportions for Weight Control -- Specially Designed Portion-Control Plates Help Weight Loss
*Loved Ones Need Not Suffer Mental Decline -- Not Anymore!

Excessive Botox Use Cause for ConcernIs there any body part where doctors aren't trying injections of Botox? Botulinum Toxin Type A, a purified form of the toxin that causes food poisoning, was originally approved as a medical treatment for two eye muscle disorders in 1989, and as a cosmetic remedy for frown lines in 2002. Within months, it became a fashion "must" among the rich and famous... and next thing we knew, Botox parties were all the rage.Botox injections are now used to treat medical problems all over the body, including excessive underarm perspiration, migraines and urinary incontinence, in addition to the continuous introduction of new cosmetic uses. Only a few of these applications are FDA-approved and though "off-label" uses are perfectly legal, they're not necessarily safe. I've spoken to a number of dermatologists about the use of Botox, and they're generally positive. However, given that to be effective Botox must often be injected multiple times, their cavalier attitude seems inappropriate. I asked Mark Stengler, ND, author of Bottom Line Natural Healing newsletter and author of The Natural Physician's Healing Therapies (Bottom Line Books) for his thoughts on the widespread use of this known toxin... and not surprisingly, he's concerned. In his view, what's most problematic is the fact that the safety profile of Botox is based primarily on its use over short periods and in low doses -- but that's not how it's typically being used. This is a toxin that should be used with great caution, he warns, since there's much we still don't know about it.

APPROVED USES

Botox has been approved by the FDA for treatment of only about a half-dozen problems, including:
*Uncontrollable blinking (blepharospasm).
*Misaligned eyes (strabismus).
*A neurological movement disorder that causes severe neck and shoulder contractions (cervical dystonia).
*Severe underarm sweating that does not respond to other treatments (primary axillary hyperhidrosis).
*Vertical frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines).

However, it is actually being used for many more conditions including:

*bladder control problems, back pain and migraines, and for cosmetic purposes other than frown lines... even though these uses have not actually been approved by the FDA. It's worrisome, says Dr. Stengler, and here's why:

*Side effects can cause serious complications. Common side effects of Botox, no matter how it's used, include pain, tenderness or bruising at the injection site. But some additional adverse reactions depend on where it is injected. For example, when Botox shots are given in the eye area, it can cause droopy eyelids, dry eyes and double vision. Side effects from an injection in the neck could include pain, difficulty swallowing and headache. Side effects depend on the individual and, fortunately, are not believed to be cumulative.

*The injections are tricky to administer, even with experience. Even in the right hands, Botox injections may go awry. Given by doctors who aren't experienced and well-trained in its use, Botox can have disastrous results, including temporary paralysis where you don't want it. If you are considering Botox injections for any reason, make sure the shot is given by a physician skilled and experienced in its use -- and know that there is always some risk of adverse effects.

*Botox injections are painful. Not everyone finds these injections even tolerable, let alone worth undergoing relative to the problem they are supposed to solve. To treat migraine or other chronic headaches, for instance, a series of 25 to 30 injections in the forehead, neck and/or shoulders every three months may be required. The "solution" may be worse than the problem.

*Effectiveness is not guaranteed. Botox doesn't always work... and sometimes works too well, temporarily paralyzing more muscle than intended.
Botox is expensive. Without FDA approval, insurance is unlikely to cover the cost of Botox injections for off-label use -- which may go as high as $2,000 for the course of treatment if multiple injections are required.

*Long-term safety is unknown. No one knows the long-term health implications of using Botox. It has been on the market just since 1989. Doctors are routinely injecting higher and more frequent doses than those used in research studies. As noted above, Botox is often injected multiple times, sometimes in multiple sites -- every three months over a period of years. If you just assume it is safe because a doctor is delivering the injection, you are doing yourself a disservice.

Adding to the fear factor is the fact that while post market studies are required by the FDA for Botox and other drugs in their approved uses, as well as the monitoring of adverse event data, there is no agency review for off-label use. However, if the FDA finds a pattern of harmful off-label use, it may take action, "if" being the key word.

THINK TWICE BEFORE USING BOTOX Before opting for Botox treatment -- for approved conditions and even more so for unapproved uses -- carefully consider the risks versus the benefits. Evaluate other medical treatment options, both conventional and naturopathic and keep in mind that even in purified states, Botox is a toxin.

WHY?

Funny how as a society we are so much more obsessed with exterior
beauty! What about interior beauty? Why is it that the most important
step in achieving beauty, a well balanced nutrition of course, is completely
missed when we think of beauty? This is really sad. People always want
to look beautiful and will spend the money on very expensive products, but
won't spend the money on the organic fruit or vegatable that is vital to their health and beauty :(

To desire beauty, one first has to view the body as a whole by respecting it, loving it and nurishing it so it can bloom from the inside out.

Thus, please think twice about what you are eating and how it is effecting your body and your beauty.

Love,
Honi :)

21 Things You Did NOT Know You Can RECYCLE :)

Thank you for always asking me what you can do to help the environment on a smaller scale that makes a big impact. Well, here is an easy list for you provided by Co-op America:

1. Appliances: Goodwill accepts working appliances, www.goodwill.org, or you can contact the Steel Recycling Institute to recycle them. 800/YES-1-CAN, www.recycle-steel.org.

2. Batteries: Rechargeables and single-use: Battery Solutions, 734/467-9110, www.batteryrecycling.com.

3. Cardboard boxes: Contact local nonprofits and women's shelters to see if they can use them. Or, offer them up at your local Freecycle.org listserv or on Craigslist.org. If your workplace collects at least 100 boxes or more each month, UsedCardboardBoxes.com accepts them for resale.

4. CDs/DVDs/Game Disks: Send scratched music or computer CDs, DVDs, and PlayStation or Nintendo video game disks to AuralTech for refinishing, and they'll work like new: 888/454-3223, www.auraltech.com.

5. Clothes: Wearable clothes can go to your local Goodwill outlet or shelter. Donate wearable women's business clothing to Dress for Success, which gives them to low-income women as they search for jobs, 212/532-1922, www.dressforsuccess.org. Offer unwearable clothes and towels to local animal boarding and shelter facilities, which often use them as pet bedding. Consider holding a clothes swap at your office, school, faith congregation or community center. Swap clothes with friends and colleagues, save money on a new fall wardrobe and back-to-school clothes – then donate the rest.

6. Compact fluorescent bulbs: Take them to your local IKEA store for recycling: www.ikea.com.

7. Compostable bio-plastics: You probably won't be able to compost these in your home compost bin or pile. Find a municipal composter to take them to at www.findacomposter.com.

8. Computers and electronics: Find the most responsible recyclers, local and national, at www.ban.org/pledge/Locations.html

9. Exercise videos: Swap them with others at www.videofitness.com.

10. Eyeglasses: Your local Lion's Club or eye care chain may collect these. Lenses are reground and given to people in need.

11. Foam Packing peanuts: Your local pack-and-ship store will likely accept these for reuse. Or, call the Plastic Loose Fill Producers Council to find a drop-off site: 800/828-2214. For places to drop off foam blocks for recycling, contact the Alliance of Foam Packaging Recyclers, 410/451-8340, www.epspackaging.org/info.html

12. Ink/toner cartridges: Recycleplace.com pays $1/each.

13. Miscellaneous: Get your unwanted items into the hands of people who can use them. Offer them up on your local Freecycle.org or Craigslist.org listserv, or try giving them away at Throwplace.com or giving or selling them at iReuse.com. iReuse.com will also help you find a recycler, if possible, when your items have reached the end of their useful lifecycle.

14. Oil: Find Used Motor Oil Hotlines for each state: 202/682-8000, www.recycleoil.org.

15. Phones: Donate cell phones: Collective Good will refurbish your phone and sell it to someone in a developing country: 770/856-9021, www.collectivegood.com. Call to Protect reprograms cell phones to dial 911 and gives them to domestic violence victims: www.donateaphone.com. Recycle single-line phones: Reclamere, 814/386-2927, www.reclamere.com.

16. Sports equipment: Resell or trade it at your local Play It Again Sports outlet, 800/476-9249, www.playitagainsports.com.

17. "Technotrash“ : Easily recycle all of your CDs, jewel cases, DVDs, audio and video tapes, cell phones, pagers, rechargeable and single-use batteries, PDAs, and ink/toner cartridges with GreenDisk's Technotrash program. For $30, GreenDisk will send you a cardboard box in which you can ship them up to 70 pounds of any of the above. Your fee covers the box as well as shipping and recycling fees. 800/305-GREENDISK, www.greendisk.com.

18. Tennis shoes: Nike's Reuse-a-Shoe program turns old shoes into playground and athletic flooring. www.nikereuseashoe.com. One World Running will send still-wearable shoes to athletes in need in Africa, Latin America, and Haiti. www.oneworldrunning.com.

19. Toothbrushes and razors: Buy a recycled plastic toothbrush or razor from Recycline, and the company will take it back to be recycled again into plastic lumber. Recycline products are made from used Stonyfield Farms' yogurt cups. 888/354-7296, www.recycline.com.

20. Tyvek envelopes: Quantities less than 25: Send to Shirley Cimburke, Tyvek Recycling Specialist, 5401 Jefferson Davis Hwy., Spot 197, Room 231, Richmond, VA 23234. Quantities larger than 25, call 866/33-TYVEK.

21. Stuff you just can't recycle: When practical, send such items back to the manufacturer and tell them they need to manufacture products that close the waste loop responsibly.

LOVE,
Honi :)

ONE coconut water price decrease (as of September 1st)
I am so thrilled to know that ONE coconut water is doing so well. I recently got the news that all Whole Food Stores across the US will be carrying ONE coconut water (planned in later September, early October I was told). This means a drop in price for everyone and I am so excited for this. Thus, I am dropping my price earlier for your benefits and the price for a single coconut water including tax is going to be $1.75 (instead of $2.10) and for the case of 12 including tax is going to be $21 (instead of $25.20). Here is the information fact sheet if in case you would like to get more information on this amazing & natural product. http://dermahaircare.com/Coconut_water.html

SHOPPING CART
Due to high demand, I am finally setting up a shopping cart on my site. I will note the effective date on my website as soon as it is up & running. It is estimated that by the end of September you can easily purchase any product that I carry in the salon. :)

ORGANIC Happy Hour
I was very pleased with the turnout of this event. Thank you once again for those of you that attended the event and got a chance to experience a true ORGANIC drink for your social outing. My main goal was to cross network and introduce the wonderful GREEN businesses that I have been both working and networking with to one another. The Hoang family were also very grateful that we had co-hosted the event together and also helped support my charity (Earth Conservation Corp). They informed me they have decided to carry ORGANIC Square One Vodka on their regular drink menu and continue to host monthly ORGANIC Happy Hours. :)

GREEN Festival in DC (Octobor 6th & 7th)
My staff and I are going to have an exhibit booth at the greenfestival this year at the DC convention center. I am so excited about this event because this will give me the chance to show that even Medical Aesthetics Industry can be socially responsible, sustainable as well as refrain from causing harm to one's health in the efforts to achieve beauty. I am representing the ONLY Medical Spa at this event out of the 200+ GREEN companies participating (Oh, and the only only one that Co-op America has recognized as a GREEN company thus far). Please read below to get more information on this fantastic event. I hope you can make it.
